The
Arts Institute at Bournemouth
The new system was implemented in the Library at The Arts
Institute at Bournemouth at the end of 2005, after research was undertaken
that looked at providing a more accessible environment incorporating the
Institute’s philosophy of providing equality of opportunity for
all. It was funded, in part, by the Government’s Aim Higher initiative,
which helps widen participation in UK higher education, particularly among
students from non-traditional backgrounds, minority groups and disabled
persons.
A
visible success
Julia
Waite, Institute Librarian, who has been involved with the project from
the start commented, “UABD has opened up the Library collection
and made it more accessible and appealing for our users. Students and
staff have found it easier to navigate around the different subject areas,
and the use of icons and colours reflects the ethos of an art, design
and media specialist Institution. In the next academic year, we will be
promoting the system at Library inductions, enabling new students to use
it fully.”
The
benefits of the UABD system can already be seen, with positive feedback
from staff and students. Library staff also find it easier using the colours
and symbols when directing students to different subject areas.
The
implementation of this project places the Institute at the forefront of
innovation in this area, with design leading the way. John Last, Deputy
Principal of the Institute commented, “This project exemplifies
the Institute's commitment to supporting all our students to achieve success.
I am particularly pleased that the project brings together Library staff
expertise with a professional student brief. As a consequence the end
project not only demonstrates excellent design but will ensure better
access and use of the library resources by all students and staff.”
